BUDA LOCAL LEGENDS
BUDA LOCAL LEGENDS
Helen and Rene Alcala
2025 Local Legend Recipients (posthumous)
Years in Buda: Multi-generational residents (Helen 1923-2017; Rene 1957-2022)
The Alcala family legacy stands as one of Buda's most cherished institutions through Helen's Casa Alde, the first Mexican restaurant in Buda, which has nourished both bodies and community bonds for over four decades.
Helen Alcala, after serving lunch to Hays CISD youth for many years, opened Helen's Casa Alde in 1980 at age 57. For 37 years, she created a welcoming gathering place known for homemade tortillas and authentic Mexican cuisine. Her culinary talents were legendary—she could effortlessly create delicious meals that would take others hours of planning. Helen's warmth extended beyond her cooking; stories abound of her small kindnesses, from making special little tortillas for children to personally delivering a single taco through rain or heat to a hungry customer.
When Helen passed away in 2017, her son Rene, who had worked alongside her for decades, took over the beloved restaurant with his wife and daughter. Born and raised in Buda, Rene inherited not just his mother's recipes but her genuine spirit of hospitality. His warm smile and kindness made a lasting impression on countless customers, making breakfast at Helen's an essential part of daily life in Buda.
The Alcalas' dedication to the community was further demonstrated after a devastating fire in 2020. Rather than closing permanently, the family pivoted to a food truck behind Helen's old family home, ensuring that Buda residents could still enjoy their beloved "fatties" (a local favorite taco stuffed with bacon, sausage, potatoes, egg and cheese) and other local favorites. The truck served the community for 2 years until Rene's sudden passing in October 2022.
Though both Helen and Rene have now passed, their impact on Buda remains profound. The Texas Legislature honored Rene with an official resolution, recognizing how the Alcala family's restaurant became more than a business—it was a cornerstone of community life where generations of Buda residents shared meals, stories, and traditions. Together, Helen and Rene Alcala created a family legacy that has become inseparable from Buda's identity, making them truly deserving of recognition as Local Legends.
PREVIOUS LOCAL LEGENDS
After serving as the Navy's 20th Chief of Chaplains, where he guided millions of personnel and their families, Rear Admiral Donald Muchow brought his spirit of service home to Buda. The Distinguished Service Medal recipient devoted over a decade as the Buda Police chaplain, led the local Ministerial Alliance, and continues supporting churches in need. Now recognized as a Local Legend, Muchow's quiet dedication to faith and community has made lasting impacts on the town he serves.
Clark has toured relentlessly for years including performances at the Chicago Blues Festival, European Blues Festivals, Ottawa and Toronto Blues Festivals, various festivals in Europe, Russia and Turkey. Along the way he has met up with old fans and friends and undoubtedly gained new ones everywhere he plays. The rest of the world is now in on what the city of Buda has known for decades: W.C. Clark, The Godfather of Blues, is an innovative and creative artist whose soulful singing and tasty guitar playing reach out from Buda, with soul, to all corners of the music-loving world.
When Jim Hollis arrived in Buda 42 years ago, the town was home to fewer than 400 people. He quickly became a community pillar—serving as Mayor in the 1980s and as ESD Board President for over 20 years. Between the Masonic Lodge and numerous local organizations, Jim has shaped Buda's growth while preserving its stories. Now in his 80s, he still tends his small 'ranch' and warmly shares the town's history with everyone he meets.
